What a tax adviser does for you
A tax adviser (asesor fiscal or fiscalista in Spanish) applies the tax rules to your case: which taxes you have to pay and how to pay the right amount without risking a penalty. We put you in touch with independent tax advisers and tax lawyers.
For individuals
They file your income tax return (declaración de la renta) with the national and regional deductions, calculate the municipal capital gains tax (plusvalía municipal) when you sell or inherit, check whether you have to file wealth tax (Impuesto sobre el Patrimonio) and plan a sale, gift or inheritance before you go ahead.
For the self-employed and companies
A gestoría for the self-employed (an administrative and tax agent) handles registering you with the Tax Agency, the quarterly VAT (Form 303, modelo 303) and personal income tax, IRPF (Form 130), and the income tax return; for companies, the bookkeeping too. A tax adviser also does tax planning: paying what the law requires and not a euro more.
Appeals against the Tax Agency
Against an assessment or a penalty from the Tax Agency you can file an appeal for reconsideration (recurso de reposición) or an economic-administrative claim (reclamación económico-administrativa), both within one month from notification. 01
It's time to file your income tax return
The filing season runs from early April to 30 June. Have a tax adviser review it if you have rental income, income from abroad or cryptocurrencies.
02
You're selling or inheriting a property
Municipal capital gains tax (plusvalía municipal) and personal income tax (IRPF) are different taxes. Plusvalía is paid within 30 working days from the sale; for inheritances, within six months from the death.
03
You're self-employed
Form 303 and, under direct assessment (estimación directa), normally Form 130: from 1 to 20 April, July and October, and from 1 to 30 January.
04
You have a home in Spain and live abroad
If you are not tax resident, you file Form 210 even if you do not rent it out: you are taxed on a deemed income (renta imputada), a percentage of the cadastral value.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about tax advisers
How much does a tax adviser charge?
It depends on the procedure: a simple income tax return does not cost the same as planning an inheritance. Always ask for the fee quote in writing before starting.
What is the difference between a tax adviser and a tax lawyer?
A tax adviser deals with returns, planning and compliance. A tax lawyer can also defend you in appeals and before the courts.
Do I need a tax adviser to file my income tax return?
It is not compulsory: you can file it yourself on Renta Web. It is worth it if you have sold a property, are self-employed or do not know which deductions you are entitled to.
Can you help me if I don't live in Spain?
Yes. We put you in touch with an international tax adviser who knows non-resident income tax and the double taxation treaties.
What do I do if I get a letter from the Tax Agency?
Look at the deadline: notices usually give 10 working days to reply, and appeals against assessments or penalties, one month.
